Went to my sister’s neighbors house yesterday for their annual pig roast. It was an amazing culinary feast. Everything from Brazilian shellfish soup to pot-au-creme and anything you can imagine in between – the BEST food (Julie the neighbor has her own catering business). We also drenk quite a bit of slivovitz (a plum wine). They do this every year because apparently the pig is the only animal that doesn’t walk backwards – and everyone wants to enter the new year on the rignt foot. I love that.
This poem by Henri Nouwen was included in a christmas card that my parents received. I decided to relay it here:
It is in solitude
That we discover
That being is more important
Than having,
And that we are worth more
Than the result of our efforts. In solitude we discover
That our life is not
A possession to be defended
But a gift to be shared. In solitude we have the freedom
To stroll in our own inner yard
And rake up the leaves
And clear the paths
So we can easily find
The way to our heart.
Congratulations to John Maeda, RISD’s next president. This is a great video intro of him, worth watching.
Some of the ornaments are 30 or 40 years old, others are quite new, but they are all special in some way to my family. From Doe’s Eat Place, to the White House, to the Bubble Room, to hand made dough ornaments, we’ve got it all. My grandmother used to love to turn off all the lamps and just sit under the lights of the Christmas tree. Ah, bubble lights!

Yes, its as dark as it looks outside. The Bourbon Mall is surrounded by cotton fields, deep in the Mississippi Delta. I can’t decide whether I like it even better than the institution known as Doe’s Eat Place – both do amazing steaks and both have enough soul and character to make certain they aren’t confused with any type of franchise. The Bourbon Mall is truly the real thing.
“Into the Wild” – a great movie with a great soundtrack by Eddie Vedder. Unfortunately, I haven’t yet read the book but I was really touched by the film. In fact, I was in Denali Park at the same time Chris McCandless was living in the abandoned bus on the other side of Denali, late summer 1992. I was on the Kahiltna Glacier, about 30 miles away. Its strange to think about being so near that bus, just before he starved – 15 years ago.

Saw this one on flickr. Taken near Banff.
Theres always a concern and a hopeful anticipation. There is always a decision to second guess and always a fond memory. But the only true peace is in this very moment..

I was out supporting my friends who ran the Dallas marathon and came across this fun band at mile 22 on Swiss Ave.
